The phone has shifted – once a device held to the ear, now it’s mainly held in front of the eyes. Such heavy usage puts a strain on our eyes.
How often do you check your smartphone? For many of us, it’s the first thing we reach for when we wake up, and the last thing we check, before falling asleep.
Studies are still determining exactly how much our smartphones affect our eyes, but it’s clear that many people experience and suffer from eye strain due to prolonged smartphone usage.
Why do smartphones make our eyes tired? There are three reasons to consider:
- Small screens and small text are highly demanding on our vision.
- Blue light emitted by smartphone screens contributes to lower contrast.
- Rapid shifts of our focus from near to far puts strain on the focusing system of our eyes.
Using smartphones for long hours can lead to eye strain, causing symptoms such as dry eyes, blurry vision and headaches. Also, it can ultimately cause sleep problems such as difficulty falling asleep, or light sleep patterns.
